We lived in Leakey, Texas which is 93 miles northwest of San Antonio in 1980 for a year. We remodeled a ranch for Rene and Elizabeth and many of you have heard us tell stories of our days of rounding up goats. We left our good friends, Joe and Beth in New Braunfels yesterday and drove to Garner State Park about 120 miles away. It is a huge place and the Frio River runs through it. There are lots of hiking and biking trails. It's located in the Texas Hill Country.
It's hunting season here and I spotted these wild turkeys.
We drove out to the Brown Ranch which is seven miles out of town and we visited Colleen and her son Greg who live two miles further up the canyon from us. They were always so very kind to us. Colleen is now 87.
The three kids all attending the same school that had grades 5-12 and they all loved it.
We had to pass through two cattle bump gates to get to the property.
The drought has taken it's toll on the spring fed rivers. We had to drive across Cedar Creek on our way into the 1200 acres of land.
We drove on back to see Colleen and Greg. They have a place right on the curve of the river and they have this pond that used to be a place to swim. The water is always cold.
Craig and Greg walked back up the river a ways to see Greg's new water source.
Colleen has dementia and I'm not sure if she really remembered who we were, but she still had a big smile and it was so good to see her. They were very kind to us when we lived here and we have missed them.

This gravel road winds back into the property where we lived and we drove up and down this many, many times.
It was 33 years ago when we remodeled and worked on the ranch and Rene is adding on and fixing up the ranch house. He had the old chimney fixed and the cistern below.
They tore down the old "sleeping porch" that was our bedroom and added on.
Craig and I had enclosed this old pole barn, but it's starting to look a little rickety now.
We used to swim in this damned up part of the river, but now the rock and sediment have pretty well filled it in.
We used to park the vehicles right in the river to wash them.
It has been pretty overcast since we arrived here. We woke up early this morning due to the time change and drove through the State Park to see what it looked like after all of these years.
We drove into Leakey to meet Rene and Elizabeth for lunch and then we went out to the ranch to see the work that they have been doing. It's very updated and modern from the days we lived there.
We so enjoyed our visit! Thanks for the wonderful Tex/Mex lunch, too!
Our kids were 5, 7 and 9 when we lived here. I'm not sure they would even recognize the place now with all of the updates.
I'll post a few pictures just so they can see it to believe it.
This is the all new kitchen. There's even a dishwasher!
This used the be the boys bunk bed room and now it's a bathroom with a huge shower!
This used to be the old bathroom that had a 4" slope to it.
This is the new addition which is now two bedrooms.
Tana, this was your room.
It's been a wonderful time visiting Leakey, Texas.
Tomorrow morning we will begin our trek west. Will end up in Welton, Arizona around the 8th of Nov.
Blessings,
Kathy
